How To Identify Different Types Of Fleas

Fleas are tiny and hard to identify. That said, there are a few different types of fleas that live in Tampa. The most common species is the cat flea. Three other kinds of fleas you might have to deal with are the sticktight flea, the human flea, and the dog flea. Telling these pests apart is quite a challenge if you don't have a microscope. Most differences pertain to body shape. As for identifying fleas in general, we recommend starting with your pets, if you have any. Check their fur for small, moving reddish-brown dots (fleas). Next, look for specks of black flea dirt. If you don’t own pets, check your carpets, furniture, and other plush fabrics around your home. Fleas like living inside rugs and fabrics that closely simulate pet fur. For more help identifying these pests, bring in the professionals at EcoSmart Pest Solutions. We offer detailed pest inspections that are sure to identify the bugs that are biting you day and night.

The Lifecycle Of The Common Flea

All fleas start out as eggs. Eggs are laid inside pet fur or in secluded areas inside and around homes. These eggs take one to ten days to hatch, depending on environmental conditions. Once hatched, larvae start moving around and feeding on flea dirt (flea excrement). After 5-20 days of feeding, larvae will spin themselves into a cocoon and cozy up inside it. This cocoon protects them while they develop into adulthood. This process takes anywhere from several days to a few weeks. Now adults, female and male fleas start feeding solely on blood and begin breeding new young. The longer you wait to address a flea problem inside your home, the quicker your infestation will grow out of control.

Three Reasons Fleas Are So Hard To Get Rid Of

There are three main reasons why fleas are among the most difficult pests to eliminate here in Tampa. Here are the reasons and what you should know to control these pests:

  1. Fleas are difficult to spot. In order to treat for these pests, you have to know where they are hiding inside your home. If you treat random areas, there is no knowing if what you are doing has had any effect without waiting for bites to stop.
  2. Fleas reproduce rapidly. A single female lays up to 50 eggs per day. If you do not address your problem fast, you will never get ahead of your infestation.
  3. Sometimes fleas get indoors on rodents, birds, and bats. If your home has an infestation of these pests, no amount of DIY flea control will address your problem. They will just keep hopping off these larger wildlife invaders.

The only way to guarantee fleas get and stay out of your Tampa home is to invest in professional flea control. For service you can trust, look no further than EcoSmart Pest Solutions.
